Shidaryu was designed in collaboration with the village of Takeda in Japan. Combining local legends of a dragon living deep within the river and the stunning scenery of their weeping sakura trees (shidarezakura), Shidaryu came to life.

The legend of Shidaryu

Long ago, it was believed that a dragon lived within the deep crevices of the roaring river. The villagers would offer dango as a tribute to the dragon every spring.

Since then, a dam was built, halting the water flow to mere trickle. While this means his power has since dwindled, the dragon now appears in a more approachable form, leaving the river every spring to make the flowers of the weeping sakura bloom. The people know him as Shidaryu.

If you look closely between the hanging branches of the sakura trees, you just might spot him, concealed among the flowers and leaves.
